axeGreetings denzions of Metal. As I sat here pondering the section name for my new articles... I was struck with the epiphany that I do in many respects harvest the sorrow of the world. You may now throw fruits and vegetables at me for saying something that some may derive as "emo", but let me tell you this... I'll cleave your skull from the body (That is a given... I'll go to prison and probably become a large black guys bitch, but hey... it's Metal).

ChallengeNow let me explain what I mean by "harvest the sorrow of the world". Take a look around you Metal Heads... those of you who understand the true nature of what is Metal. Metal is a way of life, not just a form of music. Now what do you see? Suffering, Greed, Power, Hate, Love, Lust, etc etc. Does this not bring you a sense of angquish? I go to work everyday and walk around the streets and all I see is sheep. The product of Modern Society. The product of Mass Media. The product of Government. Would you like to know my solution? As I type what I'm about to tell you, I realize that it is quite ironic. Destroy Technology. How odd does that sound coming from someone who has built and runs a Heavy Metal Social Network? Quite ironic.

So here is the grand scheme. Why?! Well, it's quite simple. The industrial age took mankind on a path of diverse market and economic growth among nations.... but..... was there a price? The price was a massive explosion of populous and nation building (not to mention wars and poverty). People were either divided or assimilated. Hey... but hold up... I wouldn't be telling you these things over a website if there wasn't a technological boom! I am a child of the digital age and I denounce it. Sure, I've met so many friends and people I would stand to protect and give my life for... all on the internet! Nerd? Perhaps. Will I still challenge you to a duel to the death? Yes.

Technology has given us so much! Not only in modern times, but from the dawn of man! Let's start in the 70's just to make things easy. Microwaves, Vaccum Tubes to Transistors (then advanced circuitry), Pong (thank Odin for Pong), Government Intranets (pre 1970), the birth of the PC (look up Dr. John Kemeny 1967), the fuckin Concord supersonic commercial airline (no longer in service)! So all these things have made life a hell of a lot easier, but should life be easy? I only covered 6 technologies from a 10 year period! Technology has been on the rise at a monumental state since the mid 1800's (History Majors debate me... I enjoy it). So here we are... the price. Well, you no longer work for your community and neighbors, you no longer better yourself spiritually (Hail Satan), you are opressed by conformity (yeah yeah... this isn't new), and nobody understands you (parents). If people outside your close group of friends understand you, than I'm sorry brother/sister... you aren't Metal. If people outside your close group of friends do understand you and agree that standing for beliefs and crushing the skulls of your enemies is badass, then well, I'm gonna come hang out with you guys.

Well put. I dream of a society where our children understand us and work with us and we use metal and what it stands for to better ourselves spiritually. I hope that we can one day create such a society and one day declare total war on this society and burn it to the ground, killing every man, woman and child who stands against us. Call me a fanatic, but that is what I am.

Misunderstood
Sindre, thanks for your take on this. I think you misunderstand the whole meaning behind what I was attempting to convey. I am talking about people returning to nature. Returning to communal living. Returning to harder, yet more fulfilling times.

As for censorship, I see where you can conclude that was my message, but it honestly wasn't focused on censorship at all. The removal of technology would definitely remove the flow of information to people... so yes I suppose this can be seen as a form of censorship. I like to look at life as a great painting with many underlying layers and facets, and censorship of a media driven world that crams as much bullshit down your throat is a mute point in the grand spectrum of life and why we are here. The amount of information that man is expected to absorb at a monumental rate is astronomical compared to days of old. Think of our working environments now with skyscrapers floor after floor filled with cubicles forcing people to become mindless robots for the greater good of their corporation; keeping the rich rich. This has existed long before technology, yet to me... it seems to be far more prevalent in the times we currently live in.

So, yes, censorship is a bi-product of my dream. I do believe people should be allowed to seek out knowledge, yet I don't think pointless knowledge should be repeatidly smashed in my face everywhere I go (Billboards, Magazines, News Networks, Television, Political dribble, Spam telling me I need a larger penis). I am a hopeless romantic who constantly looks back in time to where knowledge seekers would actually physically seek it. Am I going to lie and say that I have not vastly learned from technology? No. I built this website did I not? I know over 6 programming languages. So it is quite ironic smilies/smiley.gif It is a fantasy of ancient life filled with trial and tribulation that I romantisize. The trials and tribulations of today's world bore me.

As for telling me I am part of some conglomerate of censors who are trying to intellectually dumb down human beings. You really don't know me very well, and I found that quite insulting. I try not to take things personally, so I'm just going to go with you being passionate about your message and take on my writings. Perhaps I should have covered more points when I wrote this article. It was a spur of the moment thought that I just spit out about my general dislike for modern society. Modern Society is really what the article is about.

Anyway I'm rambling and I'd love to continue the conversation with you, though as a friend and not an enemy. I would like to hear your views, compare, and debate. As I always find this entertaining. Even two people who have completely different views can have a mutual respect for the other. This is my honor code. The whole purpose of writing this was to get feedback, so I appreciate your thoughts and would like to delve deeper into them! Talk to you soon bro smilies/smiley.gif

Now, come on, man...
Destroy technology? Technology isn't the real problem; its use is -- specifically HOW it's used. The destruction of technology for the collective good is basically the same thing as censorship.
How? Well, censorship is all about keeping certain types of knowledge/information/attitudes/whatever from people; keeping people from experiencing or enjoying certain things lest they go against the will of the censor.
Keeping technology from people claiming it's because you want to protect them is the same thing as censorship. The very same, in fact. Yes.
Actually, it's not LIKE censorship; it IS censorship, and censorship is NOT a good thing. Not ever. I don't care what anyone says, about how some people shouldn't know about certain things because they would abuse the power thusly given them (for surely knowledge IS power). Sure, it's natural and understandable, even admirable (at times) for people to think that we ought to shield ourselves from further corruption brought on by the sinister works of power mad people, but censorship only causes further problems. You see, it's very easy to think you're just keeping certain people from destroying all that is good and pure, when in fact you are just contributing to the intellectual dumbing of society, and stupidity can be just as threatening, as potent a weapon, as infinitely terrible -- if not more so -- as malignant omniscience.

"If people outside your close group of friends do understand you and agree that standing for beliefs and crushing the skulls of your enemies is badass, then well, I'm gonna come hang out with you guys." I don't like violence. Violence isn't good. Respect and justice is good though. I can fix or ignore everything and I don't need violence to do so.
" Sure, I've met so many friends and people I would stand to protect and give my life for..." You're lucky you have found those. I wouldn't die for anyone I know. Selfish as I may seem.

Well, you have to consider that troughout history the same problems have been seen in humanity. Wars, alienation, religious apathy or extremism, oppression by the ruling elite, etc etc. The collective will always be subject to the same issues. Technology does change the perspective though: technology makes us aware of what happens throughout the globe and makes humanity a global community. Still, the bare truth is we, in this technological era, are the same cavemen, Vikings, Magyars, Romans, Ottomans that killed each other since the dawn of times for monetary power and national or ethnic pride. Our lives still revolve around eating, mating and trying to procrastinate death.
But some select and rare individuals do strive for something higher. Honor, heroism, sincerity and a quest for divinity are qualities reserved for the few, and those qualities are Metal. Even before metal music existed, there were metalheads who felt they should trascend the collective schemes, and we are now bound to follow their footsteps. So let's pledge to respect ourselves and others and be ready to die fighting for the ones we hold dear. We'll never sell our souls to this rotten world of alienation, and never give in to cowardice. Let's raise our swords (real or figurative) and go find that higher truth!

This is some heavy stuff. Excellent work
I like your way of thinking about technology, it's quite refreshing to hear something like this.
Quote: "If people outside your close group of friends understand you, than I'm sorry brother/sister... you aren't Metal." I got in few verbal conflicts last academic year with some of my college colleagues for defending Metal society. Their "best" argument against Metal is "It's just screaming and banging their heads" :S :S :S
