I'll always remember Anal Cunt for being one of the four bands who broke me into the extreme metal underground back in 2006. Anal Cunt, alongside Unearth, Cannibal Corpse and Lamb of God were my four gateway drugs into the harder, edgier side of metal. It was a time when nu metal was no longer played on the radio and KoRn's Take a Look in the Mirror album was such a huge disappointment that left me only listening to Tool but looking for something that was metal that I hadn't heard before.

Given my love for highly offensive Newgrounds flash videos, when I heard the name Anal Cunt, I simply had to give the band a listen and my then 20-something-year-old mind was naturally impressed by the band's highly immature and shamelessly offensive lyrics after reading a few on songmeanings.net. The band's album It Juset Gets Worse quickly became my most listened to album. It was the heaviest album that I'd listened to that year and one of the most extreme. As somebody who only a few years earlier felt that Rob Zombie and Slipknot were extremely heavy but never went far enough, Anal Cunt's amelodic noise was probably the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard, being the most perfect sound that I'd ever listened to up until that point.

So it's truly difficult for me to believe that Seth Putnam is actually dead. A man who was the personification of 4chan's /b/ image board who railed against any and everyone he could think of has passed away. Yes, he was an obnoxious troll and he did inspire a lot of terrible pornogrind bands to start making some god-awful music. He was also the man who pushed metal to be even heavier in the 1990s. Anal Cunt was on the label known as the biggest name in extreme metal touring with high profile bands like Pantera, pushing the limits for exactly how loud music can be and did a lot to keep bands from ever selling out too much by reminding labels and promoters that there was still a sizable audience for truly heavy music. Keep in mind that the nu metal bands of the 90s were much heavier than the glam metal of the 1980s and it's obvious that having one of the loudest bands on Earth getting attention (although through very desperate means) was a factor preventing metal from getting too soft.

Seth Putnam died as he was going through a creative peak. With Fuckin A released earlier this year and both “Wearing Out Our Welcome” and “Picnic of Love II” also to have been released later this year, Seth was on his way to reestablishing his name after a decade of inactivity. Sadly, he managed to pass away before he could reclaim his crown as music's ultimate gadfly.

I've never laughed at any musician as much as Seth. Not even Weird Al or The Dead Milkmen could come close to Seth's sense of humor. Whether it's trying to upstage Burzum with the ultimate lo-fi black metal band or layering 16 microsongs over one another to make a world record for the most songs in an EP, Seth's work was always able to make me laugh and I still can’t listen to “Picnic of Love” without busting a gut.

While Seth Putnam certainly had more haters than fans - whether they're people offended by his lyrics, unable to get past Anal Cunt's lack of talent or hardcore black metal fans who are simply too butthurt by Impaled Northern Moonforest to enjoy anything about Seth - the man was still an icon. A huge middle finger to the entire world, including the band's own fans. Never before did a man like Seth Putnam enter the metal scene and his death leaves a massive hole that may never be filled.

Anal Cunt, also known as AxCx and A.C., is an American grindcore band that formed in Newton, Massachusetts in 1988.

Since its inception, the band has undergone a number of lineup changes, currently consisting of core vocalist Seth Putnam, guitarist Josh Martin and original drummer Tim Morse.

Known for its grindcore musical style and controversial lyrics, Anal Cunt has released eight full-length studio albums in addition to a number of compilations and extended plays.

They have been categorized as grindcore, noisecore, and hardcore. The band is often referred to by their initials A.C. (often written as AxCx) due to the offensive nature of their name and censorship limits on some radio and publications, and many of their album covers simply display the initials A.C.

However, the band has managed to subvert even this abbreviation by drawing these letters in a manner resembling an anus and a vulva. Their early material contained no pre-written lyrics or music.

Rather, the band developed a style which consisted of extremely loud, fast, and aggressive noise that was created entirely on the spot and was (by design) completely devoid of any actual music. Over the years, the band eventually shifted their style and slowly began to incorporate more riffs and pre-written lyrics into their songs. It wasn't until then that the band earned the reputation (at least via their recordings) for intentionally being outrageous and offensive. They recently released a "cock rock" album entitled Fuckin' A and will soon release one consisting of material similar to their old grindcore albums called The Same Old Shit.

Anal Cunt was formed on March 1, 1988 in the city of Newton, Massachusetts, near Boston, by Seth Putnam, who had previously been a member of bands such as Executioner and Satan's Warriors.

The name Anal Cunt came from Seth Putnam's attempt "to get the most offensive, stupid, dumb, etc name possible". A common misconception is that the band is named after the song "Anal Cunt" by GG Allin, but in fact Allin's song was written years after the band had started. The band did however later in their career render tribute to GG Allin by recording a version of "I'll Slice Your Fucking Throat (If You Fuck With Me)" by him and The Murder Junkies.

In Q Magazine's 2005 book The Greatest Rock & Pop Miscellany Ever!, Anal Cunt was included in a list of "25 Band Names That Should Have Stayed On The Drawing Board". The band was meant as a joke, and was supposed to only record one demo and do one show; however, they are still active as of 2011, despite several brief breakups.

Originally, the band was to produce a form of 'anti-music', without rhythm, beats, riffs, lyrics, song titles or any other of the normal features of a band, an approach exemplified by the 5643 Song EP. Anal Cunt was not the first such band Seth Putnam had created; as early as 1980, Putnam formed a noisecore band with his cousin Michael, originally named 'The Losers', and then later renamed 'Noise'. The problem was most of these bands consisted of the same few members, and so Putnam wanted to form a new band with different people.

The band's very first performance was in 1988 at Putnam's mother's house in front of some family members, namely his mother, his two little brothers and his grandmother, as well as some of his mother's friends.

Several other small performances followed, in various basements and living rooms, before their first public show live over the radio at Brandeis University, with Anal Cunt being the latest in the long line of Putnam's bands who had performed in this way. This was scheduled to be the band's first and last show and Putnam had invited future member Fred Ordonez, from the band Shit Scum to it, but he failed to turn up. As a result, it was arranged for the two bands (Anal Cunt and Shit Scum) to play a concert together so Ordonez could see Putnam's band, and a further show was arranged at Shit Scum's rented practice warehouse. The first demo was recorded on a 4-track in April in his mother's attic but this has never been mixed, released, or heard by anyone.

After a few more shows, the band decided to attempt a US tour, in August 1988, a few days before which they recorded their 47 Song Demo, which was later re-released on a few compilation of the bands' material from the early years. They recorded their 88 Song EP later that year and after its release, a number of record labels started showing interest in the band, including Earache Records, with whom they would later sign a contract.

A few releases later, Earache Records again made an offer to the band, this time to license the 5643 Song EP for a European pressing (and later to buy the whole pressing), but Anal Cunt continued to turn down such offers. This was also the point where the band decided they had done as much as they could and decided to split up, after releasing Another E.P. and completing their first European tour. This tour was in April, and recordings from this tour are numerous, appearing on the compilations Fast Boston HC and The Early Years and the bootlegs Harmonized Noise and the Anal Cunt/Patareni split.

Following appearances in a few other bands, including (recently reformed) George H. Brown (A blues rock act whose song "Foreplay With A Tree Shredder" would later be recorded by Anal Cunt for the album Top 40 Hits), From Sloth To Anger, and Post Mortem, Seth Putnam and Tim Morse decided to re-form Anal Cunt on March 1, 1991, exactly 3 years after they had initially formed.

After the band’s reformation, they decided they wanted to change their style to avoid getting bored again. The guitarist for the new, slightly more musical, Anal Cunt was originally supposed to be future member Paul Kraynak but ended up being Fred Ordonez, an ex-boxer. Some more EPs followed, including the world’s first acoustic noisecore record, the Unplugged EP, before Putnam finally decided to introduce some elements of “real songs” into the band’s material. Seth Putnam and Tim Morse tried out this idea in a 6-song session in 1992, just before Putnam successfully auditioned for the reformed thrashcore band Siege, but it was a while before the plans were fully realized.

Later that year, Anal Cunt decided on another European tour. Despite the fact that Tim Morse pulled out at the last minute, the tour still went ahead, with the band deciding to find a drummer while they were touring. The two drummers who auditioned were not fast enough for the band, so Anal Cunt decided to have them both playing the same drum kit at the same time for the beginning of the tour, before resorting to just using the faster of the two.

This tour firmly left Anal Cunt’s violent footprint on Europe, with most of the shows consisting of Putnam and Ordonez going into the crowd, punching people and destroying equipment, because of not only drunkenness but also the fact that the drummer did not know their songs very well. This was also the tour that saw Seth Putnam joining Fear of God onstage as their drummer for one show and him and Fred Ordonez recording with Seven Minutes of Nausea.

On returning to the US, Anal Cunt decided to get a second guitarist who could carry on playing with the drummer during the violence and shouting.

The choice was John Kozik, and with it came a new era of the band.

Anal Cunt's style has changed much since 1988, as originally they formed as a noisecore band before incorporating elements of grindcore and hardcore into their style.

Songs in the 'early years' were often no more than a few seconds long (their 5643 Song EP being an extreme example), although this later increased so that the average song length was between 40 seconds and 1 minute.

The typical Anal Cunt song is short and loud with extremely distorted guitars played randomly up and down the neck, near incomprehensible screaming and blast beat drumming. Some songs even show influence from punk rock, power-violence, doom metal and sludge metal.
