first time i heard decapitated i was hooked. first time i heard jfac's jonny davy's ultra rhythmic cookie monster growl(the divine falsehood), i got a big smile and thought to myself "that fucking kicks ass!" it wasn't long before i got pretty bored with most metalcore (i think divine heresy and lamb of god are the only metalcore bands i can listen to anymore) and now my musical diet is about 85% brutal/tech the rest is mostly neoclassical and post.

Ally,
For me it was Opeth and I have to agree that Mikael Åkerfeldt is one of the best out there. Aborted is pretty high up on my list as well. When I first heard the growling of Mikael I got chills and started appreciating metal a lot more.

For me it was probably melodic death metal bands like In Flames and the song "a breath beneath" by the absence (not very well known), oh and slayer, even though they are thrash metal,,,,, I actually used to not really like growls etc. but I kept listening because of the guitars and drumming and it grew on me. now i love it :P

probably unleashed they have fantastic riffs usually not fast and pretty simple but it just grows on you and since then they're my favorite death metal band then i got into some CC and deicide and the list goes on

First growl I loved was from the band Unleashed, although it's not a typical death metal band, being generally slower. But the growling was very pleasant to the ears as opposed to the high-pitched screams of black metal I had heard before with Deicide and Cradle of Filth.

Hmmmm... Angela is good for a girl. I can produce same vox as she does without even trying to growl.
