Metal Tome Updates

Website Maintenance - 06/08/2010

It has come to our attention that some features are currently not functioning as intended, as well as some graphical issues. We are working on fixing these bugs ASAP. Currently, these bugs seem to only effect Internet Explorer users. We are working on applying a code fix and will update you as the bugs are resolved. Thank you for your patience!

Suricata is a mostly self-taught scholar. In her endless efforts to discover and develop that which matters, she has delved into the most obscure depths of human and not so human knowledge.
Suricata - Mind Matters
Ever since Suricata discovered the Metal world, she’s been aware that it goes far beyond simply listening to or playing a particular music genre. It is also a philosophy, a lifestyle and a quality of the soul.

Here, this hermit will theorize about the features of the Metal mindset, what is symbolizes and what it represents as a movement and archetype.

Suricata currently lives in a small village in the tropics, after having explored a large part of the urban world, of which she refuses to take part.

Iron, metal, the pen and the sword.

philosopher_of_metalThe Philosopher of Metal lives in the same culture-less and honor-less world as any other metal lover. For him metal is like a religion in which he is a novice - no more qualified than any person to speak his mind on such an art. His favorite pastimes include the rediscovering of ancient ways - particularly those of honing the body and the ceremonious hurling of the dishonorable from high cliffs into the waters of the Skagerrak - both of which need to be done more often these days. He desires to inflict pain and harsh lessons upon the feebleminded and to bolster his brothers and sisters of metal with the strength to fight on for all eternity against the tyranny of human weakness.

Porcupine Tree Frontman Dissects The Concept of 'Too Much Information'
In his column for Electronic Musician entitled 'In the Mix,' Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson spotlights the 80s pop trifecta: Madonna, Michael Jackson and Prince, as well as the mysterious lives of superstars like Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin to dissect today's over-consumption and over-disclosure of all things celebrity.

Through his column, Wilson contemplates, "It seems to me we have now passed out of the era of the pop enigma and are now firmly entrenched in the era of reality. But when was great pop music ever about reality?

"...When I first started to buy records in the early ’80s, the only means I had to find anything out about the music and musicians I liked was whatever I could glean from the credits on the sleeve, or perhaps an interview in a music paper like Melody Maker or NME. These little scraps of information only increased my sense of awe at the magic of the music. David Bowie is a bisexual alien? I’ll buy that. Jimmy Page sold his soul to the devil? That makes total sense!

" In contrast, these days I’m only a few clicks on the Internet away from the minute details of the lives of any number of pop and rock stars on Twitter (handy if you want to know what they had for breakfast), a webcam link into their studio as they write their new album, or a blog discussing their personal and business problems. Of course, there is something to be said for this. Musicians are just regular people; the rock star thing was just a pretense anyway, so aren’t things more honest now? Yes, more honest, but hellishly more dull too. I am writing this in a magazine designed to demystify the process of how music is made (and as I write this perhaps I’m even demystifying myself), but I’m not really talking about the technical considerations of making music; I’m talking about the human aspect. I want to believe that the music I love was created by superhumans who, when they were not space traveling, hanging out with supermodels, and finding religion, spent their time dreaming up music that would somehow perfectly encapsulate the human condition in a way that only a divinely gifted being could."

Read more of Wilson's thoughts on the matter right here, and to learn more about the enigmatic art-rock outfit Porcupine Tree, pick up a copy of their latest album The Incident right here.

Opening the Crypts: Obituary
Born from the evil throes of Tampa, Florida in 1985, this band of Tardy brothers scared the ever living sh*t out of headbangers around the world with their groundbreaking combination of horrific growls, muddy production, ripping guitars and morbid imagery and lyrics.  That's why this week's Opening the Crypts is in the name of Obituary, one of American death metal's founding fathers.

Having lived out most of their career on Roadrunner Records, Obituary put out some iconic albums from 1989 until their departure from the label in 2005. While the legendary band continues to release albums today, we want to spotlight the title-track from their 1994 release World Demise. Because in a time when death metal began to change in the musical landscape, it's cool to look back and see these guys kept their torch lit.

Listen below and check back every Friday evening to hear another killer track from our extensive history.

I can't really describe the taste, I guess I could say it tastes like Halloween, and sitting in your cabin in the mountains around the fireplace on a cold autumn night. yeah thats it, thats the taste.
